The Past

Under the leadership of Dr. Roy R. Hewitt, a business school professor, a small group of Oregon State campus leaders formed the Rainier Club in 1922. They soon adopted the Greek name Lambda Phi Delta and petitioned Phi Kappa Tau for a charter, which was granted on October 15, 1925, with National President Harry A. Taylor presiding at the installation. The chapter prospered until the depression, when the membership began to lag and the chapter was forced to take boarders into its house at 242 NW 15th Street.

The national fraternity helped reorganize the chapter, and in 1938 it moved into new quarters at 27 Park Terrace, which served as home until the chapter closed in 1942 during World War II.

In 1947, the chapter was reestablished in a new house, purchased at 26th and Harrison, which was home until 1957, when the present house was purchased. Alpha Zeta closed its doors in 1982 and was briefly revived in the middle 1980's only to fail once again in 1987.

The house corporation has maintain the house at 127 NW 13th as a rental property and had leased it to the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity until December of 2003.  Currently the property is being renovated for occupancy by the new colony for the Fall 2004 quarter and is being utilized for various expansion activities.

The way ahead

Throughout the 1990's, the Fraternity had been advised that the climate was not right for recolonization. Due to statewide budget cuts in the early 90's, in-state tuition tripled and enrollment dropped sharply. In 1998, the Greek Advisor informed us that we had the highest priority for returning to campus and suggested petitioning in 2000 and actually returning to campus in 2002. Fortunately, the year 2000 finds an all time high for enrollment in Oregon colleges and Oregon State is expecting a 19 year high as well.

A recent problem was that while we followed the recommendations to postpone our return, the University allowed three expansions, two of which have failed. A new Interim Greek Advisor for the 1999-2000 school year promised expansions to three other Fraternities and the current Greek Advisor was stuck trying to fulfill all these past promises made before his arrival.

Current News

We held an alumni reception on campus in the fall of 2001 and a 50 year reunion in Salem during the summer of 2002.  The participation and involvement of many alumni at these events greatly impressed the administration and combined with the determination of the national Fraternity and several local alumni to secure a new colony, Leadership Consultants Tim Hudson and Nick DiMasi spent April 2004 on campus recruiting the new colony.  We currently have numerous alumni serving on our Board of Governors, House Corporation, and Graduate Council who are assisting the colony as they work towards the rigorous chartering requirements.  If you are willing and able to serve in any capacity be sure to contact Domain Director Jeff Anderson at roper91@hotmail.com
