The Past

Worthiness, trustfulness, and honor were the founding principles of Sigma Tau Epsilon, founded on the University of Washington campus in December 1926. Ray Miller was elected president in January, and purple and white were the fraternity colors. A diamond-shaped badge also was adopted, and by the end of January a simple ritual was written.

Upon the approval of Sigma Tau Epsilon's petition to Phi Kappa Tau, April 6, 1929, was the date set for the installation. The ceremonies concluded with an installation ball at the Olympic Hotel.

In 1940 the chapter purchased the former Pi Beta Phi Sorority house on Seventeenth Avenue and converted it into a fraternity home. The chapter operated during World War II through the 1942-43 school year, when an alumnus began to manage the house as a home for war workers in the area. Six men reopened the chapter in March 1946. After the war, the membership exploded, and the house proved too small. In 1954 the chapter was able to buy the former Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority house, which was in good condition and suited to the chapter's needs.

After a reorganization in the early nineties, the fraternity quickly regained prominence on the University of Washington campus and within a couple years performed an extensive remodel project on the entire chapter house. Unfortunately, major risk management violations were discovered during a chapter social event in 1998 which resulted in an agreement between the University and the Fraternity to leave campus for at least 4 years. Faced with the possibility of three years without incoming funds, it was decided to sell the chapter house to Pi Kappa Alpha in order to retire the outstanding debts from the remodel project.

The Way Ahead

Despite a setback after being denied permission from the IFC Presidents following our presentation in November 2001, we found out in the fall of 2002 that we could return at our convenience, and then petition the IFC for recognition once we felt we were strong enough.  Though we were initially considering a joint expansion with our Alpha Zeta Chapter at Oregon State, it turned out best for us to return to Washington in the fall of 2003 and Oregon State in the spring of 2004.

After having four different Leadership Consultants on campus at various times throughout October of 2003, we have launched with an initial group of over 30 fine men with several more they are meeting with.  The colony was officially installed with colony officers elected during the Building Men of Character Weekend and Colonizing Banquet the weekend of November 14-16th.  The final payment on the sale of the property was made on time in March of 2004 and the colony initially shared a property with Theta Delta Chi that spring and summer.

The fall of 2004 found the colony renting the old Delta Kappa Epsilon property on 18th and 47th holding around 40 of the colony members.  The rest of the chartering requirements were met during the fall and a 200 page petition was reviewed at the February 2005 National Council meeting.  Alpha Pi was approved for chartering and National President Bill Crane presented the charter on Saturday, April 2nd.
