The Beta Gamma Story

Chartered as Phi Kappa Tau, December 4, 1947

Domain Chief Ernest Price called together four members of nearby Alpha Kappa Chapter at Washington State University to develop of colony at the University of Idaho. Price, who was an architect, arranged for the purchase and remodeling of a house at 730 Deakin Avenue, which was occupied by the colony in September 1947; and by October 1, the group had grown to twenty-eight.

National President Roland Maxwell presided at the installation on December 4, 1947, presenting the Beta Gamma charter to Harold Neill, the chapter's first president. In addition to Price, E.B. "Jim" Newsome (Mississippi State, 1940) was a key alumnus in the early years of the chapter, serving as house corporation treasurer and financial advisor.

When the Chapter outgrew the Deakin Avenue house, a former sorority house on Greek row became available and was purchased. The new millenium sees a renewed committment to the chapter with a significant renovation and remodel of the common areas of the chapter just as Beta Gamma was gaining national prominence by receiving more national awards than any other Phi Tau chapter.
